Hawai'i

Computer’s all better, able to grab pictures from both cameras now, so we’ll try to get caught up.

First landfall after leaving Los Angeles was Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, Hawai’i. We took a bus tour of the island visiting several of the standard tourist places. I thought this shot of King
Kamahaha near downtown Honolulu told a lot about the island.

After that we stopped at the first Christian mission to land here. A small group of couples left Boston for the purpose of saving
the savages of Hawai’i. Among other things they brought with them a prefab house where they all lived, one family per bedroom (with as many as 5 children, figure that out). It is the oldest wooden building on the islands, and is shown here with the add-on kitchen made from local material. They also brought a printing press, and for the first 2 years studied the spoken
Hawai’ian language, defined the fundamental sounds, and created the first written Hawai’ian language. Their first printing was then a reading primer in Hawai’ian to teach the natives to read, a new concept. Only after that could they print the Old Testament, in Hawai’ian, to begin their work.

After that we cruised up the coast, stopping at Waikiki Beach (surf was down),

and finally ending up at a hotel past Diamond Head with their own dolphin pools. They didn’t have a show that day, but we got to see the trainers giving a foot massage, and lightly working with the beautiful animals.
