Skagway

At the little town of Skagway (population 1800, 4 cruise ships 10,000) we rode the White Pass & Yukon train. Built during the Yukon Gold Rush of 1898, the narrow guage tracks and most of the rolling stock are restored original, the green/yellow diesel electric locomotives only date from the 1950's. Many of the gold rush stampeders hiked up to this pass, while some chose the shorter, steeper, Chilcote Trail. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police required each person entering Canada to have enough provisions to last one year – 2,000#. We tried, unsuccessfully, to imagine what it would have been like to schlep 2,000# up this trail.

Skagway harbor, our ship is all the way to the left. This bridge has been abandoned, replaced by a boring steel plate girder bridge.

The original trail over White Pass. Don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.

Tracks. Bear??
