Jungle babies

Next we went on an excursion around the Iquitos area, including a local family run zoo.

We'd seen 3-toed sloths in the wild - 50 meters away and 30 meters up a tree. It ws fun to actually hold one, and look at this really strange animal close up. Did we mention they m o o o v e r e e e a l y s l o o o o o o o o w?

Pancho is a baby wooly monkey that adopted us. When either of us held him he curled up in our arms and clung tight with all four hands and tail. At the end of our visit when we had to give him back to his keeper he cried! He lookd so much like Phil, and Margie is such a natural mother, he came very close to finding a new home at the 100 Aker Wood.

Not as cute, but still in the lovable baby category was this rodent. Never did understand what type, but Margie loved it anyway!

An animal we wanted, but failed, to see in the wild was the Anaconda. They had 4 here, and none were cuddly babies! This adolelescent weighed about 44 kg, and was longer than Phil. S/he was an armful, and did NOT cry when handed back!

Then we visited another local tribe, the Borat, with the obligatory welcome dance. They did a second dance honoring the turtle, which we felt better qualified to join.

And finally we emerged victorious from the jungle, bodies more or less intact, ready to continue our trip down the mighty Amazon!
