Falkland Islands

Well, that was what the schedule said, anyway. We pulled into port this morning, intending to anchor and then use our life boats as tenders to shuttle us to land. The pier isn’t deep enough for our ship. Winds at 50 kts, gusting to 60, and forecast to hit 70 (hurricane category 1) this afternoon. Oh well, on to Porto Madryn. We had planned on visiting one of the largest King Penguin colonies in the world, but they’ll just have to wait until next time.

A few years ago this same ship had a similar experience here, but a larger ship from a different cruise line made a different decision. They apparently believed a different forecast, and tendered many of their 3,000 guests ashore to visit the island with a population of 2,500. Winds picked up, and they were unable to bring their guests back for two days. The residents apparently got very creative on accommodation.

Oh drats, I was so interested in hearing more about the Falkland Islands. I have been so curious about them ever since the war. So glad to hear that you are both well and busy. I love hearing about all of your doings. Keep up the blog it makes my day.
Love,
